Pablo Neruda & theorizing

1/10/2018

The book (poetry) I read & re-read for pleasure during this winter break is “The Book of Questions” by Pablo Neruda.

Neruda leaves a special impression on theorizing thoughts*.

Many riveting questions--

“What forced labor
does Hitler do in hell?”

“Why wasn’t Christopher Columbus
able to discover Spain?”

Why do I think Neruda has a lot to offer on theorizing in social sciences?
A theorist is a storyteller (based on reasonable facts and evidence). But stories  culminate in answering a great question/dilemma. Neruda has unflinching dedication to questioning realities, leading to some great questions.

In this quest, Neruda applies various heuristics (and transcend many). You can find some of these heuristics in the writings of A. Abbott and Richard Swedberg.

*Maybe I should write a paper on this (but keeping it for later).
*Intro to the book by William O’Daly (1991) is interesting. O’Daly is also the translator.
